"short": "Rihanna’s third album introduces the world to “Umbrella.”",
"full": "Superstars aren’t created overnight; most are lucky to access any notoriety after dropping a single blockbuster hit. But Rihanna isn’t your average superstar. The Barbadian singer’s career, it could be argued, broke through with a solo clash of a hi-hat cymbal now recognized the world over as the first sound of “Umbrella.” The Grammy winning track opens her third LP. With some assist from JAŸ-Z, Ri’s delivery of “brella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh” was the sound heard around the world, the start of her own personal revolution: a departure from her “Pon de Replay” Caribbean pop (after all, “Umbrella” was originally written for Britney Spears, whose team turned it down) and an arrival at total ubiquity. His is the first voice we hear, but her voice is the one we remember.\n\nIt sets the tone for her third album, a confluence of ambitious, boundary-pushing vocal work on Rihanna’s part—a pivot toward edgy songcraft targeting the global stage—and a laundry list of A-list producers: Tricky Stewart, Sean Garrett, The-Dream, and Timbaland. They, armed with the skill set to evolve Ri’s voice, worked to maintain her dancehall roots (like in “Say It,” which samples Mad Cobra’s 1992 song “Flex”), laying the foundation for an ineffable career.\n\nGood Girl Gone Bad has it all, boasting a prescient genre-agnosticism decades ahead of the pop landscape. “Shut Up and Drive” is high-octane New Wave rock ’n’ roll, for example, though the record is largely classified as pop R&B, while “Disturbia” charms with its gothic disco. There’s also a deep understanding of the importance of worldwide dance-pop hits, particularly with “Don’t Stop the Music,” courtesy of Norwegian producers Stargate, and its clever sample of Michael Jackson’s “mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-koosa\" from his 1983 single “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.”\n \nThe record isn’t stacked exclusively with timeless classics—the pursuit of perfection is a fool’s errand—but even the non-blockbuster tracks stand out as exemplars of their time. Looking for a smooth-like-butter acoustic R&B ballad challenging Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable”? It’s “Hate That I Love You” featuring Ne-Yo. Or maybe it’s spacey, existential R&B with an ’80s-inspired spoken-word interlude you’re after? Look no further than “Question Existing.” Or do you prefer late-2000s sounds to be stacked with orchestral instruments and melancholic metaphor? That’s all “Rehab,” co-written by Justin Timberlake and produced by Timbaland. Good Girl Gone Bad remains the opening note for all the culture-shifting music Rihanna would create in the years that followed—as well as the legacies she’d inspire."

"short": "What’s her name? Rihanna turns up the volume with Loud.",
"full": "After navigating a highly publicized dark period, Rihanna reemerged as vibrant as ever with her fifth album. She told producers Stargate at the time of recording that she wanted to go back to having fun and making happy, uptempo records. The album’s unofficial theme is liberation, with the singer dyeing her hair a striking red that perfectly embodied the attention-grabbing energy that catapulted her into full-fledged pop-star status with unshakable international dominance. The LP spawned seven singles, three of which topped the charts both Stateside and overseas as party anthems: “Only Girl (In the World),” “What’s My Name?”, and “S&M.” Rihanna wasn’t new to crafting dance-driven hits (see 2006’s “SOS” and 2007’s “Don’t Stop the Music”). But it was Loud that confirmed just how easily she could rule any genre she experimented with. \n\n“Only Girl (In the World),” the album’s lead single, sets the tone thanks to its pulsating bassline and throbbing synths that defined the 2010s EDM revival. Marking her first time dipping into the genre, Rihanna demands the spotlight with full-on belts, showcasing some of her most commanding vocals to date. Naturally, the bigger-is-better approach worked in the singer’s favor: “Only Girl (In the World)” soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The party continues with “Cheers (Drink to That),” which revs up an Avril Lavigne “I’m With You” sample into a downright fun late-night sing-along, while “Raining Men,” alongside Nicki Minaj, finds the ladies having fun using potential suitors as toys.\n\nLoud is a kaleidoscopic reflection of Rihanna’s personality, spiraling from cheeky to vulnerable to unabashedly taboo. The ferocious “S&M” is filled to the brim with “na-na-na, come on!” come-hither chants and sexually suggestive lyrics as the singer explores the world of bondage and fetishes. Not one to take herself too seriously, though, the bedroom anthem winks with playfulness. “Sticks and stones may break my bones/But chains and whips excite me,” she growls atop Hi-NRG production dotted with fuzzy keyboard riffs. The confidence continues with “Skin,” one of Rihanna’s most alluring tunes, as she seductively purrs over a beat that fuses R&B with languid trip-hop.\n\nWhile Loud may be a more pop-leaning record, Rihanna continues to celebrate her Bajan roots, injecting tropical doses on the dancehall-tinged “What’s My Name?” Featuring frequent collaborator Drake, the chart-topper highlights the pair’s palpable chemistry as they trade flirtatious pickup lines: “The square root of 69 is eight somethin’, right?/’Cause I’ve been tryna work it out.” “Man Down” is deeply rooted in Caribbean reggae, as Rihanna details a vengeful tale of being on the run after pulling the trigger, echoing the suspenseful style of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ 1973 single “I Shot The Sheriff.”\n\nThreaded throughout the album are ballads centered on love’s ebbs and flows: the Enya-sampling “Fading” is a lightweight R&B midtempo where Rihanna moves on from an inconsistent lover; “California King Bed” is a heartbreaking power ballad as the singer desperately tries to save a relationship that’s growing more distant by the minute. The album closer “Love the Way You Lie, Pt. II” with Eminem, the sequel to the rapper’s hit single, tells Rihanna’s side of a broken love story over a tearful piano melody. Loud set off Rihanna’s pop explosion, and she’s remained music’s most fun party girl ever since."

Here, he maintained the momentum while branching out with his sounds: There’s the Kanye West-featuring, Auto-Tune-drenched “Put On,” in which Jeezy drops a string of car- and food-related punchlines seamlessly. Elsewhere, choppy percussion peppers the boastful “Who Dat,” and “My President,” a song of its time, closes the album, celebrating the yet-to-be-elected Barack Obama."

"short": "Rihanna backs it up with her sixth album, Talk That Talk.",
"full": "Rihanna was no stranger to EDM by the time her sixth album, Talk That Talk, was in the works: “Don’t Stop the Music,” off 2007’s Good Girl Gone Bad, quickly became a ubiquitous dance-floor standard; she dipped her toes into dubstep on 2009’s Rated R and collaborated with David Guetta for a track off his own 2009 album, One Love; and 2010’s “Only Girl (In the World),” Loud’s earth-shaking single, pulsed with the kind of shimmering, synthetic elements fit for the top of the charts and the clubs of Ibiza.\n\nBut with “We Found Love” and “Where Have You Been,” two of the tunes that kicked off her Talk That Talk era, she reached a new echelon of electronic alchemy while cementing her status as a fearless pop star who thrives in the experimental space between genres. Co-written and -helmed by prolific DJ/producer Calvin Harris, “We Found Love” and “Where Have You Been” not only set a new benchmark for Rihanna’s vocal performance, but they also gave the Navy two contrasting dance anthems—the former a euphoric ode to love itself, the latter a moody, urgent search for understanding and affection. Both would go on to be pillars in Rihanna and Harris’ respective setlists, but “We Found Love” remains their shared greatest hit: It spent 10 weeks at No. 1, and its video, filmed by renowned director (and frequent Ri collaborator) Melina Matsoukas, took home a Grammy and a VMA.\n\nYet in spite of the dance largesse of “We Found Love” and “Where Have You Been”—as well as “Drunk on Love,” which had Rihanna crooning over The xx’s “Intro”—Talk That Talk was as eclectic as her prior albums, in that these dance smashes were right at home next to power ballads (“We All Want Love,” “Farewell”), an appearance from longtime partner in rhyme JAŸ-Z (“Talk That Talk”), unfiltered, R-rated sexploits ebbing over heavy beats (“Cockiness [Love It],” “Red Lipstick”), and blissful flirtations (“You Da One,” “Do Ya Thang”). Each song throws back to a sound, aesthetic, or genre she’s experimented with before, from her dance inclinations to her Caribbean lilt and her omnivorous embrace of rock, rap, and every genre in between. And though it delivered an exceptional vocal showing from Rihanna and the hypnotizing, can’t-let-go choruses her fans have loved since her “Pon de Replay” days, she leveled up with Talk That Talk—and found the love of millions far beyond the dance floor."

"full": "After a brief glimmer of R&B stardom in the early 2000s, Jhené Aiko stepped away from the music industry. In the dozen or so years following, she went through a birth (of a daughter), a death (of a brother), and a revival (of her artist self). Following her acclaimed 2011 mixtape, Sailing Soul(s), the Los Angeles-born singer alchemized all of these experiences into her mesmerizing 2014 debut album, one of the decade’s chillest alt-R&B touchstones.\n\nLike its evocative album cover, Souled Out hovers somewhere between the sea and sky, occupying its own infinite space in ambient waves of synths, whispers of live instrumentation, and Aiko’s always cool and calming presence. Producers No ID, Dot Da Genius, Fisticuffs, and Key Wane help the singer embody an airy, acid-dipped aesthetic using minimal sounds to expansive effect. Psychedelic guitar and jazzy horns slither seductively through to give this ethereal odyssey some weight.\n\nAiko’s method of freestyling has a beat-poet mysticism to it, even when her mantras are imbued with bitterness (woozy kiss-offs “Limbo Limbo Limbo” and “Lyin King”). But mostly, she’s open to exploring and exposing her truth. “You gotta keep goin’,” she purrs on “W.A.Y.S.,” one of the album’s more rose-colored reveries. Halfway through the track, she switches pronouns, turning her chant into “I gotta keep goin’.” Aiko does this often throughout Souled Out—speaking to loved ones and former flames as she speaks to herself. \n\n“Promise I'll be, promise you'll be, promise we'll be alright,” she coos on the dreamy lullaby “Promises,” featuring music by downtempo duo Röyksopp and appearances by her late brother, Miyagi (via a clip he once sent her), and her daughter NAMIKO, who repeats her mother’s comforting words. Later, on the balmy piano groover “Eternal Sunshine,” she reaches something close to enlightenment, declaring, “If I were to die today, there's not a thing I would change, I’ve lived well.”\n\nSure, there are standout singles on Souled Out, such as the hip-hop sizzler “The Pressure” and “To Love & Die,” a moody confessional featuring Chicago collective Cocaine 80s and a slick sampling of 50 Cent’s “Many Men (Wish Death).” But this LP is meant to be a widescreen experience to sit back and soak in. This Deluxe Edition features two bonus tracks that reflect the sadness and serenity of the album: the heartbreaking “Remember” and the blissed-out “Blue Dream.”"

"short": "Sail Out points to a talent intent on achieving success on her own terms.",
"full": "Preceded by appearances on Big Sean's \"Beware\" as well as Drake's \"From Time,\" Sail Out announces Jhené Aiko as a singer/rapper who's more than the sum of her guest spots, a vocalist who balances wit, sensuality, and vulnerability with the aplomb of forebears like Ciara and Aaliyah. She's joined by Childish Gambino on \"Bed Peace,\" a nod to John and Yoko's 1969 Bed-Ins for Peace antiwar protest. On \"Stay Ready (What a Life)\" and \"WTH,\" featuring TDE cohorts Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul, respectively, she wades through a haze of murky cloud-rap akin to sonic soulmate Drake's. With its piano sample and neon chorus, \"The Worst\" approaches pop accessibility, but its gloomy atmospherics point to a talent intent on achieving success on her own terms."
