Normally places will ask what order to bring stuff out and they just curated the experience and brought out an extra plate so we could share.\n\nDinner ended with another happy anniversary gift as well as breakfast to go.\n\nFood amazing, and service outstanding!",

"text": "Been here for 10 years and cannot believe I haven't written a review. First time dining at the bar and I think we like it better than the main dining room. The bartenders are very friendly and there's more of an interaction atmosphere.\n\nAlso, I didn't realize we could share a five course meal, which is amazing and very delicious. It's actually still too much food for the two of us and I did say Share and I'm so happy they allow for it because I don't like over eating dinner anymore.\n\nWe had the\nLobster risotto five stars so delicious\nCrab salad four stars very filling\nSear scallops with mussels four stars\nBranzini. Five stars. Love the crispy skin with the moist fish.\nPork tenderloin already cut. They actually were a little bit delayed on this maybe because they forgot, but they made up for it by pouring us some red wine while we waited the wine was delicious.\n\nAnd also don't forget free dessert, assortment of little bites of heaven.\n\nService was six stars. The hostess actually showed me to the bathroom but also checked if it was occupied and then went upstairs to check if that one was occupied and told me I can go to that one. It was like royalty service. I'd loved it.\n\nI think we're gonna start dining at the bar again as there's so much flexibility with the menu this is one of our favorite restaurants in the city consistent food and service highly recommend",

While my husband and I were talking, the bartender overheard us mentioning that we were finally able to celebrate our anniversary. To our surprise, we were soon presented with an array of beautiful desserts and special anniversary surprises from the chef.\n\nIt was such a thoughtful gesture and made an already wonderful evening feel incredibly personal and special. "text": "My wife and I have always talked about eating here for many years. This past month we finally did it and booked dinner for our 17 year wedding anniversary.\n\nParking wise wasn't bad - there is parking near by but be warned if you have a larger size car you'll have some difficulty parking perhaps.\n\nWhen we got to the restaurant, we were warmly greeted and were escorted to our table for dinner. We reviewed the menu and our waiter Blake was very detail oriented and helped us guide us through our ordering. We opted for the 5 course meal but changed some of the foods up. A few of the plates that I really enjoyed was the lobster risotto's, scallops, and the traditional steak. The flavors was great and when we got to the cheeses- there was so many to choose from. Blake gave me wonderful suggestions and the Brie was the best!!! Then we go to the deserts. I forgot the gheradeli was next door and that was what I wanted but we had so many deserts to pick from and complimentary cake for our anniversary.\n\nThe place was dim for the nice ambience. It was cozy and we were able to enjoy our conversation however the tables were a bit too close since you can hear other folks conversations quite clearly.\n\nOverall. Well worth the experience and food. Can't wait to come again!!!",

So too has the service; always gracious, knowledgable, efficient and friendly.\n\nWine and cocktail selection is amazing and supplied by the talented staff behind the bar. While speaking of the bar; my last two visits were enjoyed while sitting at the bar. If you want a more interactive meal with on-the-go pairing suggestions, this is the option for you (Shout out to Michael). Wine selection is international and available by the glass, half and full bottles. BYOB is acceptable with a minor corkage fee.\n\nAmbiance and decor are classy and relaxing. Wood, glass, lighting, materials all offer a warm and settling environment to sink into while enjoying your culinary adventure. The most difficult part of your evening will be deciding on the 3, 4 or 5 course meal. First world problems!\n\nI'm already salivating, need to plan my next trip to SF!\n\nCheers!",

"text": "I've been to Gary Danko a few times over the years, and it continues to be one of San Francisco's classic fine dining restaurants. The service is consistently warm, attentive, and professional, and the atmosphere is elegant without feeling overly formal.\n\nThis visit, the lobster risotto, scallops, and seafood dishes were fresh, beautifully presented, and well executed. Every plate showed great attention to detail.\n\nThe reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that while the food is consistently good, it hasn't quite delivered the same \"wow\" factor I was hoping for compared to some of the newer Michelin-starred restaurants in the Bay Area. The menu also feels a bit traditional.\n\nOverall, it's still a wonderful place for a special occasion, and I'll gladly come back again. If you're looking for classic fine dining with outstanding service, Gary Danko is definitely worth a visit.",

"text": "My mom and I are in SF this weekend enjoying our first ever mother / daughter trip while my Dad is home holding down the fort. As everyone knows, we're foodies, and we thought that coming to Gary Danko would be a very special memorable meal here in the city, and while there were certainly positive moments of our two hour dinner, overall, I would not return.\n\nWe arrived a bit early for our 6pm reservation, and we were seated promptly at a deuce in the side, dimly lit dining room. The decor was all mirrors and dark abstract paintings - heavy, and a tad depressing. My mom sat in the booth and I took the chair. I could see my mom, and a door to the street that was diagonally to my left, and it was a bit off-putting because at one point a pedestrian used the door as a mirror, and she was picking her teeth. A curtain to shield this vestibule from the dining area would be a welcome addition. Additionally, GD's flowers are lovely, and I appreciate the attention to detail there, but the extremely tall arrangement next to our table was all vase and the pretty flower arrangement was so close to the ceiling that all I could see was water unless I craned my neck upwards to peer at the blooms.\n\nAnyway, the dining experience commenced as soon as we sat down, when the spring pea gazpacho amuse bouche was brought to the table. It was refreshing, but nothing overwhelming. It really felt rushed, and this too, set the tenor for the evening.\n\nDespite my reservations, we took a few minutes to peruse the menu, and then decided on the four course option.\n\nI ordered:\n\nGlazed Oysters - Deliciously buttery, extremely buttery - in fact, butter is the primary ingredient in the majority of the dishes. If you don't like butter, don't come here!\nLobster Risotto -tasty & generous portion-size\nRoast Maine Lobster - Also buttery, I did not need the shells to be on the plate as they did not add anything to the dish, and instead got in the way of enjoying the buttery potato puree. Shells are not a garnish.\nChocolate Souffle - with dark chocolate and vanilla sauce - I wanted top layer to be a little crispier, and it was a little too soupy - it needed more time in the oven.\n\nMom ordered:\n\nTuna Carpaccio - Fresh and simple - her favorite dish.\nScallops - Too salty and there were only two scallops, disappointing.\nDuck - Very salty, unattractive plate - Duck was prepared well but the crust it was smothered in took away the fine flavor of the duck itself. She could not finish the sides due to the saltiness. I told one of the servers about this, and nothing was done. No apology, nada.\nChocolate Souffle - Same notes as me, too soupy and crust not crisp enough.\n\nWe each had a glass of Prosecco to accompany the meal, and it was fine.\n\nGill was our lead server and he did a good job of taking care of us. Overall, the service was very good, and I do want to recognize the folks working on the floor for their attentiveness. My bread plate and water glass were always full, and I appreciate that I did not want for anything while in this restaurant. Gill even showed me the way to the ladies room, and opened the door for me, which was a first.\n\nThe little pastries that were given to us after the souffle were cute, but we had no room for them, so we had to have them boxed. We also appreciated the little pineapple cream cakes that were given to us as a parting gift.\n\nI really had high hopes for this restaurant, but upon reflection, Gary Danko did not deliver the experience that I expected from an establishment with this price point. I have had absolutely perfect meals before at places like 11 Madison Park, Gramercy Tavern, Le Cirque, and the former La Grenouille in NYC, and the Ritz in Paris among others, where attention is paid to absolutely very detail of the dining experience from start to finish and even beyond. I guess I should have known better to come here when they lost their Michelin star, but again, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I will not make this mistake again.",

Business casual fits right in, though dressing up never feels out of place.\n\nWhat I appreciate most about GD is their remarkable consistency. With each passing year, they hit the mark every single time with delicious dishes, beautiful presentation and polished, exemplary service. It's rare for a restaurant to maintain such a high standard over time, but GD manages to do it with ease.\n\nEn route to the restaurant, the choices of a 3, 4 or 5 course dinner weighs heavily on my mind. It never fails; 5 courses always win. With the variety of options available, I change it up a bit each time, with some visits heavier on the seafood; other times, more protein centric. The one dish I order without fail is the Roast Lobster. It is amazing!\n\nTheir great food and service is what keeps us coming back.",

"text": "AMAZINGLY SPECIAL! What a night of great food, attentive waitstaff and loving company.\n\nJust as they opened, we stepped foot into a world of pleasurable senses. I'm referring not only to the intimate but unpretentious setting, the delicious food that stirred our palates, but for the intuitive and kind waitstaff. Their presence is not only to serve great dishes, but, to enhance each patron's experience to the fullest. Anticipating one's need was illustrated throughout the evening. Between courses and in my excitement, my fork had tumbled to the floor. With one quick glance from one waiter to another, I had a replacement fork by my side no sooner than I had looked over at my boyfriend.\n\nOrdering is easy in that you choose either a 3, 4 or 5-course dinner. Since everything looks and sounds delicious, the difficult part is narrowing it down and choosing. To make things easier, I entered in knowing that EVERYTHING must be delicious, so, there is always my next visit to order other delectable selections to try.\n\nI started off the evening with a Pineapple Rum Madera. My wonderful BF knew that I would thoroughly enjoy this sweet, delectable libation! He also ordered a bottle of an Alexander Valley Vineyards' Merlot.\n\nOur amuse-bouche was a delicate broth with mushrooms and crunchy daikon.\n\nOUR COURSES: let's just simply say that every bite was delectably savored.\n\nFIRST ~\nLobster Salad with Pistachio Mousse, Fava Beans and Honey-Vanilla Vinaigrette.\nRisotto with Lobster, Gulf Shrimp, Shimeji Mushrooms, Peas and Asparagus.\n\nSECOND ~\nRoast Maine Lobster with Potato Purée, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Edamame and Tarragon.\nPan Seared Bass with Herb and Nettle Gnocchi, Squash, Spring Onion Confit and Sorrel.\n\nTHIRD ~\nLemon Pepper Duck Breast with Duck Hash, Bacon Braised Endive and Rhubarb.\nRoasted Pork Tenderloin with Pork Belly, Eggplant-Pepper Marmalade, Pea Tendrils and Soy Mustard Glaze.\n\nFOURTH ~\nLemon Soufflé Cake with Crème Fraîche Panna Cotta and Raspberry Sorbet.\nTrio of Crème Brûlée (Vanilla, Maple & Bourbon) and Assorted Cookies.\n\nThe palate pleasure didn't cease there! "text": "I remember when my parents went to Gary Danko when I was a kid. They came home and raved about it. Maybe 2 decades later, and I got to experience it with them for my mom's birthday and Father's Day!\n\nWe had a reservation. It's a cool location near Fisherman's Wharf, but it's not touristy. It feels old-school SF. Service is wonderful, of course.\n\nI like that it's a customizable tasting menu. You can pick 3-5 courses! There'll be something for everyone.\n\nThe lobster and duck were wonderful. The Squab pasta was fine, but not as good as the other mains.\n\nThe desserts (including the souffle) were such a treat! So light and fluffy. Best souffle I've had in SF!\n\nThey were accommodating to my mom's allergies. Staff handled a misbehaving child so well. She carried him and walked around!\n\nI will be back for sure! They also gave us Pineapple cakes to take home.",

"text": "I've been fortunate enough to have been able to visit Gary Danko a few times, although its been a while since our last visit. Made reservations about a month in advance for a Friday night 6:30pm reservation.\n\n5 courses for $185. Good sized portions and we were quite stuffed - probably overly so. All the dishes we ordered were good but the standouts for me were the glazed oysters, scallops, and the salmon. The cheese course is always my fave course - wish I could remember the names of the ones I liked. Could never pass up the chocolate souffle, but I really liked the profiteroles. The French toast was another good one.\n\nService has always been excellent. Although not right away, I'm sure we'll return again.",

"text": "Dinner was at 5 pm - they didn't open early for us to sneak in first to freshen up.\n\nOnly 2 other tables were there at 5pm and we were the first one through the door,\n\nEnjoy the food there still. We haven't been back since 10 years exactly next month. Came to celebrate Father's Day , my bday, and anniversary! The 3 course went up in price due to inflation from $83 to $130pp. It's more expensive than getting the 5 course back then. 3 course is a good size to share for 2 people so you get to try 6 dishes.\n\nCheese spread is intense but counts a dish for 4\nTypes of cheese. They bring the cart to you, we didn't order but saw many did.\n\nWe skipped the appetizer and dessert to ge the most bang for the buck. We saw others getting salads though.\n\nScallop, Lobster, Branzini fish, duck,\nLamb, and filet\n\nBonus starter soup\n\nMy fav dish was the scallop\n\nThough most dishes I would say are on the salty side\n\nThey gave us each a small dessert plate to celebrate\n\nGet to leave with the breakfast pineapple goodie\n\nAmbiance was a bit chiller than I recall though I was naive to fine dining back then. They do still fold the napkins for you when you step away from the table though.",

"text": "Although I dined with three non-vegetarians, I wanted to share a vegetarian perspective because I went in expecting to spend the evening feeling disappointed with limited options. Instead, I was blown away. Every single bite was delicious, and my meal ended up being one of the highlights of the night.\n\nI chose the four-course menu, and my only real criticism of the entire experience was the pacing. There were a few longer gaps between courses, and I think the meal could have been staged a little better by combining or rearranging some of the courses. That's honestly my only complaint.\n\nThe service, however, was outstanding from start to finish. The hostess who greeted us was incredibly warm, friendly, and welcoming. Before dinner, we enjoyed drinks at the bar while waiting for the last member of our party to arrive. The bartender was knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely fun to talk with.\n\nOne small note: the Chinotto didn't taste anything like Chinotto to me--it was much closer to grapefruit juice. On the other hand, the bartender created two custom mocktails for my friend, and they were the best mocktails any of us have ever had. None of us drink alcohol, so having such a great bar experience really added something special to the evening.\n\nOnce we moved into the dining room, the experience only got better. Two of us had four courses and two had five, and every dish was excellent. Returning briefly to my comment about pacing, I do think some of the courses could have been served closer together. That said, I suspect things might have flowed differently if our server, Blake, had taken the order himself rather than the random staff member who all of a sudden was taking our order.\n\nSpeaking of Blake, he was fantastic all night--friendly, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. Honestly, I almost don't need to describe the food in detail because everything we ordered was exceptional. Every dish was beautifully prepared, every course felt thoughtful, and every bite was delicious.\n\nOverall, this was an outstanding dining experience, and despite a few pacing issues, I would happily return.",

"text": "I celebrated my birthday here and was not disappointed.\n\nService - Professional yet personable , I felt welcomed, the waiter had a great sense of humor, but remained polite and professional throughout my experience. For my birthday a custom dessert was presented as well as the chef including a taste of the Sturgeon caviar. Gary Danko gave the impression that they genuinely cared about my celebration.\n\nFood - They allowed me to choose 4 courses including entrees, I greatly appreciate this setup and I did not leave hungry. The filet was excellent as was their duck. The lobster itself was very good, but I did not enjoy the split peas and sides with that dish. The cheese cart can use a refresh, I recall the last time I visited cheeses included honey and nuts and the presentation was more robust. Standard red grapes were used, instead of large or seasonal grapes.\n\nThe vibe is traditional and has the high end refined feel that fit the occasion. Gary Danko is not inexpensive, but the quantity and quality of their food did not disappoint.",

"text": "I can see this restaurant was stellar 25 years ago, and that it has not elevated with the times.\n\nThere's a restaurant called Charleston in Baltimore that has a similar concept of menu. Pay one price, order any combination of things. I would say that Charleston does it much better by including dessert for free. It is hard to justify wasting a full order on dessert. In addition, the food at Charleston just tastes way way better.\n\nThe food was consistent, quite good but very very safe. Salt was generally lacking, which was very noticeable on two dishes- one, the branzino, while cooked perfectly, had absolutely no salt, relying instead on a very mild citrus sauce. Could have been excellent had they seasoned the fish. The filet was same, I finally caved and asked for salt on the side, and then I did enjoy it. The oysters were good but pretty basic.. tuna was fine. The lobster was a good lobster. Nothing exciting, but solid meal.\n\nI sat at the bar and the service was a bit lacking. For one, I was literally never asked how I was enjoying my meal? They came and went with dishes, and no engagement. Very odd. Near the end, I craved a palette cleaner, so I asked would they possibly bring me a tiny scoop of sorbet. They said, sure, and promptly charged me $12. Was it unreasonable? No, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Part of the joy of going to very nice places is that small requests can be accommodated without being nickel and dimed.\n\nAnyway I am glad I tried it. SF has many many better options.",

"text": "I booked this through OpenTable, where reservations open up about 60 days in advance. Since I was planning a 50th birthday and really wanted the private room for our group of seven, I actually set an alarm for midnight to snag a Saturday night spot right when it dropped. For the private room, you have to choose between a 5:30pm or 8:45pm seating. Even though I've been hearing about this place for decades, this was surprisingly my first time actually eating here, and it did not disappoint.\n\nFor parking, they don't offer valet so the easiest options are to take an Uber or park a block down at the Ghiradelli Square garage.\n\nWe showed up 15 minutes early and were escorted to the private dining room in the back, up a few steps. As noted on the reservation site, there is no wheelchair access to the private dining room.\n\nThe room had a great vibe. Much quieter than the main dining room and dimly lit but not so dark that you couldn't see anything. Even though the large oval table seats ten, it was perfect for our group of seven; we had plenty of space to stretch out.\n\nThey kicked things off with a massive wine list and cocktail menu. I thought about bringing a bottle of wine but corkage was $100/bottle. Our party stuck to cocktails, and I started with the \"Breakfast of Champions.\" It's a twist on an Old Fashioned made with cereal milk-washed Maker's Mark, which was interesting and actually pretty good, but for the second round, I just went back to a classic Old Fashioned, my go-to drink.\n\nTheir menu is available as a 3-course ($130), 4-course ($165), or 5-course ($185). The menu lets you pick from appetizers, seafood, meat and game, a cheese selection, which they curate, and dessert. The cool thing about Gary Danko is that you don't have to follow a set order. You can customize the whole meal however you want. If you really wanted to, you could even just pick main courses!\n\nWe all went with the 5-course meal. Why not? I chose 2 appetizers and 3 main entrees:\n1) Crab salad - although it appeared \"small\", it was beautifully plated with a fresh spring salad, grapefruit and orange wedges, and 4 pieces of dungeness crab leg pieces on top of an avocado quinoa \"cake\". It was the perfect dish to start with.\n\n2) The lobster and rock shrimp risotto was the star of the show! While I expected a small appetizer portion, the dish was surprisingly generous. It was packed with seafood and was the best risotto I've ever had!\n\n3) Next up was the roast lobster, and it definitely did not disappoint! The plating of the tail and claw was stunning (see my picture), and the sauce was next-level. I actually had to use some bread to soak up the leftover sauce, yes, it was that good.\n\n4) Keeping with the seafood theme, I went for the seared scallops with fregola, cumin carrots, and arugula pesto. The scallops were perfectly seared, and the whole dish was so flavorful that I had to grab another piece of bread just to get every last bit of the sauce. The steak was incredibly tender and came conveniently pre-sliced into four pieces, which made it easier to pick at, even though I was stuffed.\n\nThe timing of the meal was perfect, with about 25 minutes between courses so we never felt rushed. The service was also top-tier and the staff moved in sync to present everyone's plates at the same time, kept our water glasses full, and cleared everything quickly. Plus, they kept the table stocked with fresh bread between every course. I wish I went easy on the bread and butter. The several slices I ate definitely put me over the top!\n\nSince we were celebrating a 50th birthday, they brought out a slice of chocolate cake with a candle. It arrived right alongside the chocolate soufflé one of my friends had ordered as a course, so we all just dug in and shared. That soufflé was incredible. They also included two plates of petit fours to share.\n\nBecause there wasn't a booking after us, they let us hang out as long as we liked, and we finally headed out around 9 PM. It was honestly one of the best dining experiences I've had. If you have a group of 6 or more, I highly recommend booking the private room, it makes the whole night feel so much more intimate.",

They've always been consistently good and their portions are not unbearably small like other high end restaurants.\n\nMy favorite thing about this restaurant is how they do their tasting menu.\n\n1) not everyone in your party has to order the same amount of dishes. They will time the dishes as best as they can so no one is sitting there awkwardly without food in front of them.\n\n2) there's no real structure to the tasting menu. You can order all main courses or all desserts, it's up to you! I usually do 1 started, 1 seafood, and 1 meat dish and I'm stuffed. We usually have one person order one more course so we can all share a dessert. But if you don't have a strong sweet tooth, they do give small complementary dessert bites at the end.\n\nEverything we ordered was cooked perfectly and plated beautifully! The staff was attentive and the vibe of the restaurant felt elegant without trying too hard.",

"text": "What an icon. To survive as a restaurant. Last time i was here in 2010, 16 years later. Arrived for 6:15 pm reservation. Before coming, got an Open Table message asking if I was coming with my party of 3? Confirmed. I wrote and asked if there's room for a walker. Yes but no valet parking. We scored a parking in front with yellow zone only up to 1 pm. SF has so many parking restrictions that this was unbelievable. Who gets to park in front of a restaurant? The hostess was super nice. She said parking was ok and she came out to make sure I park properly. To celebrate my friend's birthday, I made sure birthday was in my comments in the reservation. We were welcomed and my friend was wished happy b day. We studied the menu from their website prior to coming. I had 4 course and the one guest had 3. We had a tiny gazpacho to start our dining journey. Lobster risotto was my 2nd favorite. That green oil was called \"herbal tarragon\" and can I get a bottle to go? (Just thinking in my head). The ahi tuna was way too salty. Presentation is a 10, not worth anything when you ruin it with salt. My next course was brazino fish. I enjoyed all the taste from the rasins to the endive sauce. Crispy skin on fish. The breast of the duck was next. I asked for less salt (a yelper said the dish was too salty). The hash was salty, but intriguing. I tasted duck fat. The lighting in the dining room is on the dark side but you get acclimated. Duck didn't taste like duck. My eating mate had filet of beef. Very tender. The seared scallop looked good. The Finale was my favorite part. The chocolate souffle with vanilla and chocolate sauce poured in front of you. Perfection. That souffle was purely fantastic. So chocolatey, light and airy. I savored it as long as i could. We were served tiny little assortments of miniature desserts. Well, lastly the presentation of a slice of chocolate raspberry mousse cake for the birthday person. That was so tasty. Perfect to end this special occasion. Service was impeccable. Slices of bread served automatically, water topped off. The cheese cart looked amazing. If ever I come back, I want to try the lobster. But im grateful to have come. Dining room was not full at all. Before you leave, each guest presented with a gift. I really like the hostess. She brought the walker back. Another person bid us goodbye.",

"text": "This is a really special intimate place as soon as you step on their red carpet. They just think of everything. The hostess takes your coat, a staff waits near the crowded bar to take your drink order, the makeup mirror inside the \"spa\" restroom, along with the sound of trickling water, bread is put on your plate without you noticing, the \"present\" for the guest when they pay, the little leftover in a nice gift bag, a purse hanger, and the best part for me is the little plate of miniature desserts at the end. I feel like 10 people must have served us in 3 hours of eating. They remembered that this was a birthday celebration. I didn't have to remind or say anything. At the end, a candle on the most delicious passion fruit mousse came out for the honored person. This would be a great place to propose (hint, hint). I saw a lot of couples dining. One couple even had a baby in a stroller. The baby slept through the whole dinner (it must be the dim light). That is another special thing, you can actually hear and talk with no loud noises.\n\nHighlights: I love the scallops and the duck breast, perfectly done. I had the foie gras, but couldn't really enjoy it because of the video in my head. It did melt in my mouth. If you are a cheese lover, when they push the cheese cart to you, you might think you are in heaven. The starter curry soup just wakes up your palate. The choice is yours for the taking: 3 course, 5 course, or special menu. Reminds me of being on a cruise ship when you can pick and choose. My friend had 1 appetizer and 2 entrees. This is such a neat concept to me.\n\nIt's a long meal so bring someone who you would enjoy to visit for 3 hours. Our reservation was for 9:00 p.m. My little friend didn't like the waiter asking if we needed a taxi or valet to get our car. She felt it was snobbish. She didn't feel the waiter was that personable, but I can see he was way too busy serving and tending to his job. If I were him, by 12 midnight, I'm down to my one string of patience.",

"text": "This is an institution for a reason. The food was very well executed and I like how they kept the portions generous and the price is still very reasonable. You can't beat this place for a 3 course meal that costs $135 before tax and tip. The service was top notch and attentive as well.",
