"text": "As a VP of a fully remote team - I can see this being valuable. While I do not “play games” we do meet three times a week for 1 hour.\n\nThe main problem with remote work and remote employees, they tend to work and think in silos - only work on what is assigned no more and no less. What does the sprint board say. That is fine when you evaluate and value productivity by piece meal or story points. I value productivity as a positive influence towards a common goal. This common goal is set by leadership, management and team together. This is missing in today’s environment. The water cooler talk, break room conversations, passing in the hall all had productive communications that do not happen any more. Teams seem to have just a vague understanding of their teammate - with my not caring anything about their teammates - they are removed, so not important.\n\nI cannot speak for your leadership but I am expecting that they are trying to get the team to see and understand they are part of a bigger picture and need to learn to communicate and trust in a non formal fashion - this is needed for true productivity.\n\nIf you have good leadership, ask them why. I love it when my team asks me why - You might not see why and they do. Management does not always expose things well or sometimes intentional. If you still think it is not needed, let them know and discuss. Be nice and respectful with an open mind. Be expected to finally hear because I want you too - after a couple of pushbacks. Then you can decide your voluntary future with the company.",

"text": "We do something similar where I work. One downside I've not seen anyone mention is that:\n\n1) if the gathering is not mandatory, then it can be a morale killer for those who are simply too busy to ever join in. Imagine being stacked up to your eyeballs in work that you're scrambling to get completed on schedule while your coworkers are spending their time playing games.\n\n2) if it is mandatory, well now I'm wasting time that I could be spending to get work done. So now I'll have to make up that time on my own time to keep on schedule, which isn't exactly great for morale either.\n\nI think in many cases these kind of activities can be good for remote workers, since working remotely can start to make your coworkers feel more like work bots than actual human beings. But if you work at a place like I do, where people in some roles are given 5 hours of work to have done by the end of the week, while others are given 16 hours of work to be done which must be done by the end of the day, then that can be a real downer for those who either never get to participate or who must participate at a cost to themselves.",

Inevitably though there would be laughter and often quirky things that would happen. And we'd see each other outside of our usual roles. The \"bonding\" was often a result of the humor and sometimes absurdity of the team game. The gain was a little more safety in our work interactions and often some inside jokes too.",

Usually everyone prefers a game like Scribble io or codenames, but there is no restriction. Its just a tools down time where team members can interact beyond work. Its optional, so we usually get 80-90% turn up. Its great. Maybe you can use anonymous poll to suss people out.",
