WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones (Black)

Excellent sound, very poor durability
The sound quality and noise cancellation are excellent. When they work, they are among the best headphones I have ever used.
Unfortunately, the build quality has been a huge disappointment. The hinge/plastic near the ear cup has broken multiple times during normal use. I have had to repair it with glue several times just to keep using them. Now the microphone/audio during calls is also starting to fail.
For headphones in this price range, I expected them to last much longer. Great sound alone is not enough if the product keeps breaking.
I would not recommend them unless Sony improves the durability of the hinge design.

Excellent sound

Noise cancelling was great at the beginning. 
After a couple of weeks it just suddenly not quite working properly anymore. I can still hear other people talking, some random noise from the environment when the noise cancelling is on. Couldn’t find a way to set the noise cancelling back up properly. The noise cancelling function is close to nothing. And for this price really would consider other brands for next time

Not recommended

The sound and noise cancelling are good, but the build quality is unacceptable for headphones this expensive. I had problems within two years, then the hinge snapped during normal use. For a premium Sony product, this feels cheap and poorly designed. I expected much better, and I wouldn’t recommend the XM5 at this price.

Hinge napped

Have had these for two years or so.

Cutting out if I breathe too rapidly has always been an issue.
Have downloaded and activated all of the supposed “ fixes”.
Now they work for a few seconds , then cut for half a minute , ad nauseum.

At this point I am totally frustrated and totally disappointed.
I “ upgraded “ to these from some Sennheiser ANC headphones which I had used for several years . Had believed the reviews which rated the XM5s ahead of the old Sennheisers.
Worst decision I have ever made.

Does anyone want a set of XM5 headphones ?, little use, going cheap.

I’ve been really impressed with the Sony WH-1000XM5. The noise cancelling is awesome for movies around the house and they’re also great for office use when you need to focus. I picked mine up second hand in near-new condition and they’ve been 100% worth it.

I think they’d be perfect for long-haul flights in business class with a lay-flat seat setup. My only real downside is they can feel a bit bulky in a window seat in economy when you’re trying to lean against the wall or get comfortable. Besides that, sound quality, comfort, and noise cancelling are all top tier.

I've had this for a few years. The touch panel stopped working and made the headphones buzz which was very annoying so I had to remove the feature, but it sounds great.

This is a good set of headphones with great noise cancellation. It is very light and has a long battery life. There is a problem with slow connecting to my phone and occasionally they will disconnect for no reason.

I pre-ordered the XM5's after owning a pair of XM4's so I've had them for a few years now. The sound cancelling is excellent, the mics are great for conferencing, the auto reconfiguring is a fantastic feature. Having them on plane trips, in an office environment, or next to anything that hums is a miracle. That being said it has a few little things that could be better. The earcups are too shallow & the band is tight so wearing for a long time starts to hurt - I never experienced this with the previous XM4's, so I bought deeper earcup foam to mitigate it mostly. Also the mics would be great if they worked as an xbox mic when connected with a cable. It seems odd to have such advanced mic technology to have to use an inline mic. If these issues are resolved on the following models they would be unbeatable, but still definitely worth the purchase.

I bough this pair of headphones soon after they came out back in 2022 and I have been happy with them ever since...! The noise cancelling is excellent and the quality is very good once you adjust the sound with the equalizer.

When your fragile hinges break in less than a year of gentle use and Sony will blame you for the damage and refuse to honour their own guarantee.

It's so widespread and well documented that this particular model is subject to a class action lawsuit in New York (google 'Kanter v. Sony Corporation Of America et al').

Sony will not honour your consumer rights.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones Black

Based on my experience, I would advise potential buyers to read reviews carefully before purchasing. The headband hinge on my unit broke after 1 year and 10 days under light use. When I contacted Sony, the repair was declined as it was considered physical damage and the product was just outside the warranty period. I later noticed other reviewers reporting similar hinge issues. This was disappointing, as I expected better durability at this price point. I am also disappointed that Officeworks continues to stock this product despite similar reports.

I bought these back in October 2025 and I havent looked back, they are packed with features and now that the xm6 have come out the price will be better than ever!

Best Headphones

I broke the last pair of headphones I owned… when I enquired with Sony about getting them fixed they offered a really great discount on just replacing them. So, I went for it but the first time I put the new pair on I noticed a buzzing sound in the left ear. I’ve been calling, emailing and chatting with Sony almost daily and struggling to get them to commit to just swapping them out for a new pair. I know these things happen but I don’t understand why I have to continually chase them to get this sorted. I just want a new pair of headphones that work without static or buzzing. #sigh

I purchased these headphones and a second pair, as gifts for other people. Your sales workflow in the online store doesn't appear to accommodate such a circumstance for existing members. I now recieve emails like this, and all of the helpful informational ones for new owners twice as if I'm a new user/owner, whereas my own set of headphones was already registered through the site and app. It's quite annoying, and I imagine a real pain in the neck to try and sort it out with your systems. So hopefully it will stop when the recipients register their ownership.

The choice was between this model and the XM4s. Initially, I was inclined towards the XM4s due to their positive online reviews regarding value for money. However, the XM5s garnered superior reviews, to my knowledge. The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) on the XM5s provides the most effective noise-canceling experience I have encountered in headphones, and the high-resolution audio delivers exceptional clarity and crispness. The right ear tap/slide feature is remarkably intuitive, offering excellent responsiveness and convenience. Furthermore, the headphones are exceptionally comfortable, providing a plush feel that allows for extended wear. In conclusion, these headphones represent a worthwhile investment for me, and I wholeheartedly endorse this product.
